A prequel to the original Drakengard, Drakengard 3 transports players to a medieval world where six sisters wield special magical abilities as the "Intoners." These sisters have brought peace to the earth with their power to manipulate magic through song. Harmony is disrupted, however, when the eldest sister, Zero, attempts to murder her younger sisters with the help of her dragon companion, Mikhail. As the story progresses, players find themselves in a battle to unravel the mystery of Zero and learn her true intentions. The familiar weapon change system, which allows you to change between various weapons during battle, has been refined for Drakengard 3.

Now players can now seamlessly switch between weapons in the middle of an attack and continue on the offensive. Furthermore, weapons can be changed on the fly to meet the demands of the battle at hand and turn the tide in your favor. Players can use weapons in tandem to pile on the hits and string a monster combo. Weapons can also be upgraded to increase their attack power.

Ground combat refers to standard battles where you control Zero.

Utilize the newly refined weapon change system and work with your disciples to massacre waves of enemies. You can summon Mikhail under certain conditions to provide backup during battle as well.

Zero rides Mikhail during dragon combat sequences to engage in thrilling physical battles.

Mikhail can freely attack from the air or ground. On the ground, he can use his wings to evade incoming attacks, use his ferocious fangs to bite foes, or unleash his deadly breath attacks. Experience exciting dragon combat from the air by using Mikhail's breath attacks or taking a dive to crush your enemies below.

Speed your way through city areas while weaving between buildings, or face multiple foes in the skies to experience unique battle sequences not found on the ground.

The Blood Gauge fills up as Zero slashes her enemies and is doused in their blood. She can then activate Intoner Mode when her excitement reaches its apex. Intoner Mode allows you to unleash a barrage of maniacal attacks with unrivaled power.

Progressing through the game unlocks quests and completing one will garner rewards based on your performance. All quests have time limits and the objectives can range from obtaining specific items from enemies or unlocking treasure chests. Try your hand at some quests if you're in need of money or base materials.

Each quest comes with a restriction which requires using a different style of play. The restrictions can vary from those that limit you to only using a sword, to those that prohibit the use of items.
